1. The Villain -  Struggles against the hero.
2. The Donor - Prepares the hero for his quest.
3. The Helper - often has a gift or power that the hero doesn't posses, who helps or aides the hero in their quest.
4. The Princess - the character the hero loves and often is the objective of the quest.
5. The False Hero - first seen as a good character but later reveals as a villain or evil.
6. The Dispatcher - sending the hero off on their quest.
7. The Hero - seen as the victim/seeker/winner, reacts to the donor and at the end often marries the princess.

Hansel and Gretel Fairy Tail:
1. The Villain - The witch
2. The Donor - The dad
3. The Helper - Gretel
4. The Princess - Hansel

Narative Theory - Hansel and Gretel

During a famine, an evil stepmother orders her husband to abandon his children in the woods, but the son, Hansel, overhears the plan, and leaves a trail of pebbles to guide him and his sister home safely. The next time they are abandoned, Hansel drops breadcrumbs, which are eaten by the birds. Lost and starving, they stumble upon a house made from gingerbread, only to be captured by the wicked, cannibalistic witch who lives inside. She enslaves Gretel and imprisons Hansel, fattening him up to eat.
When she orders Gretel to heat up the oven to cook Hansel, she tricks the witch into leaning into the oven and pushes her in. The children rob the house of riches and return to their father, to find that their evil stepmother has died.

These are my interpretations of the narrative theories inspired by Todorov and Propp.

Todorov Equilibrium Theory

Equilibrium - Hansel and Gretel are happily living with their father.

Disruption of the equilibrium - They get a step mother who is evil and a famine happens causing the step mother to order the father to abandon the children in the woods.

Recognition of the disruption - Hansel and Gretel hear of the plan so they leave a trail of pebbles, then bread crumbs which get eaten by birds causing them to get lost in the woods.

Attempt to repair damage - Hansel and Gretel attempt to find home but find themselves caught by a witch in a gingerbread house, Gretel then pushes the witch into the oven and they escape.

New equilibrium - Hansel and Gretel take as much food as they can and find their way back home, to find the evil mothers dead, causing a happy ending with their father and famine is fixed by gingerbread house.

Propp Narrative Theory

Preparation - Hansel and Gretel realise they are going to be stranded in the woods, so they leave a trail of bread crumbs to lead then home.

Complication - The bread crumbs get eaten by birds which causes them to be lost and stumble upon a witched house and get captured.

Transference - Gretel begins to plot theory's to herself whilst the witch is busy fattening Hansel.

Struggle - Gretel cannot think of an escape plan and the witch is ready to cook him. She is then told to turn the oven on, and Gretel saw the opportunity to push the witch in.

Return - Gretel pushes the witch into the oven and releases Hansel, they then carry as much food as they can back home.

Recognition -  They find that their evil mother died and they happily lived with their father without famine because there was plenty of food from the gingerbread house.

XMen

The two wise mutants Professor X and Magneto are seen to be retelling the African folk tale of The Tortoise and the Eagle, with the tortoise representing Professor X and the eagle Magneto.

Three of the main XMen characters are seen to be based on the European stories of the Brothers Grimm, with Jean Grey as a sleeping princess awoken by Cyclops. Featuring Wolverine.

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel are a young brother and sister threatened by a cannibalistic witch living deep in the forest in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. Then eventually escape by pushing the witch in the oven.

I would put a twist the ending and have the witch climb out of the oven and chase them through the woods until one of the siblings find a weapon like a axe or chain saw, then finally kill the witch

Straying From The Path - Avengers

Most of the characters in Avengers are a adaptation of Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, with Captain America as Peter Pan; the Scarlet Witch as Wendy; Quicksilver as her brother; the Wasp as Tinkerbell; Black Panther, Hawkeye, Iron Man, and Thor as the Lost Boys; and Klaw as Captain Hook.

Some Marvel characters that are in  the Avengers comics are a adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, with She-Hulk as Dorothy, Captain America as the Cowardly Lion, Iron Man as the Tin Man, Thor as the Scarecrow, Magneto as the Wizard, and Scarlet Witch as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Straying From The Path - Spider man

This assignment is focusing on straying from the path and re-inventing fairy tales.

Spider man and Mary Jane is an adaptation of Little Red Riding Hood featuring Mary Jane Watson as Red Riding Hood. I like how a original fairy tale can become a very action packed super hero movie.

Spider man and Gwen Stacy is a gender-reversed variation on the story of Cinderella, featuring Gwen Stacy as a princess and Peter in the Cinderella role.

Comics venom spider-man battles artwork marvel wallpaper

Spider man could be seen as an adaptation of a Japanese ghost story featuring Venom as a Tsuchigumo-like villain.
